Focus
Portfolio of Focus images

So far Focus has been one of the most interesting topics for me this semester, I have found that close up macro shots have been the best for exaggerating the factor of focus. And because of this I have been taking many still life images as I feel they work best with this type of shot.

A few days ago I decided to wake up early in order to catch a sunrise where I could take some pictures for the Light topic, after I was done with the sunrise I found an ample opportunity to take some still life photographs since the available natural light was beautiful. I found a bunch of logs and a few leaves in the park which I decided to photograph until I finished off my final Compact Flash card, there wasn't a lot of space left on the card so I apologize for the amount of images, despite that fact I still feel I managed to take some of the best photographs I have ever taken and I am pretty sure I took a potential final 8 photo on this outing.

note: All three of these images were taken using an aperture of f/1.8

Whilst the composition of this image isn't perfect, and well the colours are slightly bland, but I feel this photograph has strongly shown the capabilities of focus in the camera. The image is graduated between focus and out of focus as compared to most of my focus images which do not show the transition. I do like the circles of confusion which the dew drops make in the grass.

This way of focussing works very well with this photo. The soft blur leads your eyes into the middle, the focal point, the singular leaf.

Now whilst this image does not show the transition of focus like the last one does I still feel that this is a strong contender for my final 8. Everything about it makes it a rather attractive photograph, I tried to stick to the rule of thirds in order to bring out a powerful composition. The focal point is fairly obvious, being the two leaves on the log, but this time they do not hold your attention, the background is fairly interesting and holds some detail despite the fact it is strongly out of focus. The fresh and clean low lighting provided by the morning sun greatly compliments the image by illuminating the grass in the foreground to create strong contrast within the image.

I'm now stuck on trying to decide between this photograph and the previous one for my final 8 selection. This one has a much stronger focal point of the two images, but slightly less interest and colour as a trade off. Once again I complied to the rule of thirds to create a powerful composition which entices the viewer. the reason that this photo holds it's focal point on the leaves stronger than the previous image is due to the fact that they are pretty much the only object in perceivable focus and they are much closer in perspective than the last photo.

I am tempted to pick both of the last two photos for the focus section of my final 8, I just don't want to though due to the fact that they are of the same subject under the same conditions. I will have to find a contrasting image to go with one of the two above photos for the final selection.
