Photography

Throughout this journal which is for my Photography module at the University of Derby I will be writing down my current knowledge and development of my skills as a photographer as I progress through the semester.

First of all I would like to share my understanding of a camera.

When I first picked up my Canon 400D DSLR camera I have to admit I was a little bewildered by all the dials and options that it provided to me. It's a little bit embarrassing now but I have to admit I was pretty much restricted to using just the auto setting on my camera for the first couple of days. I then began to experiment with the different settings and discovered that I had much more control over how I wanted the image
to be taken, I started to play around with the Aperture priority and Shutter speed priority settings until I fully grasped how the camera was altering the settings to give the correct exposure. From that point onwards I have always been using the fully manual setting on my camera so that I can wholly control the outcome of the image and instead of producing bland -auto- images I am now creating images of my own style.

Exposure
Exposure is the total amount of light allowed to fall on the photographic film or image sensor (depending on whether the camera used is film or digital) during the process of taking a photograph.

There are several variables that affect the exposure of an image, these are : Aperture, Shutter speed and film/sensor speed(ISO).

If the sensor does not receive enough light then the image will generally be very dark or dim without the required amount of detail, this is called an underexposed image.

When a sensor receives too much light, again the image loses some detail and the image looks very light and bright, this is when an image is over exposed.

What you have to do in order to correctly expose and image is to alter the variables, aperture shutter speed and iso so that the sensor receives just the right amount of light so that the image does not lose any detail.

I will shortly explain the variables that need to be combined to created a correctly exposed image.
